Xahsan is a very old wingless griffin. A subspecies of griffin originally bred to make better pets (can't fly, docile). But as breeders bred them with varying species, like those capable of mimicry, they began to realize a few were quite sentient, able to learn speech (beyond mimicking) and capable of free thought.
Breeding of the species is now limited to select breeders and is heavily monitored. Individuals capable of advanced thought are allowed to integrate into society. But due to their origins and very low average intelligence (compared to other sentient species) they are often end up on the bottom rungs of society if not captured for illegal trades...
Xahsan got lucky though, and was chosen to be Zan's Guardian. Less of a job, more of a job title, Xahsan was Zan's mortal representative. He's capable of limited speech, taking great pains to improve for the sake of his adopted daughter.

Rowlet's distant cousin.

: Dude, Rowlett is great! c:

Oh my god he's so adorable! He looks very Barn Owl-esque though some great horned or snowy owl features. I assume the cane allows him to walk or stand upright, at least to some extent. Is this something a lot of the more sentient griffins do or is this one of the "great pains" he's taking for his daughter?
August 6th, 2016, 6:19 pm
: Haha, glad you like him! Barn owl and Snowy were the two main inspirations.
Sentient wingless griffin walk on two legs to emulate other sentient creatures (as they often are assumed to be loose pets if not...). It's not good for their back though, so they often need a cane or give in and walk on four legs. :C

Barn owl barn owl I love barn owls! :D At my old house there were barn owls that used to come and sit on my fence every evening. Sometimes they'd sit there for half an hour or so. I watched them from my back steps. It was nice :)
But yeah, anyway, Xahsan is so cool! Actually, the whole sentient griffin species is cool, and the backstory is fascinating, and I'm really eager to see this project finished, and gaaaah :D

@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek: Awesome! I'm super jealous, never seen a wild owl myself. I do have osprey and great herons in my area though! And I think I saw a brown eagle once! Also seagulls. Lots of seagulls.
August 6th, 2016, 7:34 pm
: Yeah, it was really special :) I don't see wild owls too often any more, but if you go walking in the woods in the late afternoon/early evening, you might get lucky!
And oh wow, ospreys and eagles! Now I'm jealous, lol. Occasionally I see different species of hawk flying around, which is nice, but never an osprey or an eagle. And oh, herons, I see those every so often. Once one was just flying overhead as we were going for a walk. They're so beautiful :) And, seagulls! Um...is that...good or bad? XD
If you don't mind my asking, where do you live? :)
August 8th, 2016, 10:49 am
@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek: Well I'll keep my eye out then. I bet there's some around here too, they're just very sneaky...
Only saw an eagle once in my life though, so they're not very common XD Ospreys though, there's a nest down the road from me, one on my way to work, and one at my workplace! The ones on my road are my favorite because they yell at me when I walk past. *shot* It's like: "Guys, I'm 60 feet below you. I'm not climbing up that telephone pole to get you. Calm down!" XD
Seagulls are just everywhere. Even before I moved up here and lived nowhere near a body of water...seagulls.
I live on the St. Lawrence river, right between the border of the US and Canada! c:
August 9th, 2016, 11:16 am
: They are that! Keep hoping :) If you hear any really weird noises around dawn/dusk, it could very well be owls. Barred owls sound like demon monkeys fighting when they're courting each other O.o And barn owls scream as if they're being murdered.
Ospreys everywhere! :) LOL, I love birds when they're nesting, they're so very overprotective. Especially birds of prey, or so I hear.
They like you! X) And that's cool! I've always thought it would be nice to live on a river.

@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek: I'll keep my ears open! C:
It's very nice! I'm also right on the waterfront too which is great! I can see huge ships pass by my house daily c:

@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek: Just heard what I think is an owl! Not sure what I'd describe these sounds as though, haha.
September 5th, 2016, 9:26 am
: Wow, it took me forever to get back to you! :S Sorry!
Anyhow, where you live sounds so cool, and congrats on (maybe) hearing an owl! The Audubon Society has a great online bird guide where you can select your general area of the US, select the owl family, and see all the owls in your area and listen to their calls! :D I'd check the range maps for each one, though, just to make sure they're near where you live.
September 5th, 2016, 5:20 pm
@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek: No problem!
Thanks! I'll check that out. Sadly I think the owl was just an osprey. A few days ago I heard the same cry and saw one flying by :C
September 5th, 2016, 6:42 pm
No prob! I like spreading the helpfulness that is Audubon's bird guide around whenever possible; it's helped me a lot in both trying to identify birds that live in my area and learning about birds that don't when I'm researching another area for my stories.
Aww...well, at least you won't get fooled again! Better luck next time :)
September 11th, 2016, 11:23 pm
@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek: AHMAHGOD I HEARD AN OWL! Thank you so much! I looked up the site and listened to all the owls--it's a Great Horned Owl! :D
...I'm playing the sound bite to get a response from the real one now XD
September 11th, 2016, 11:47 pm
: You're welcome! And wow, how fortuitous XD But a Great Horned Owl! Eep, you're so lucky :3
Good luck! If you get to see it, or even just get a response, let me know!
